In a significant boost for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) subscribers, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the launch of a homegrown 4G network developed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative. The new network, created with indigenous technology, is set to be available across the country in a few months, marking a major milestone for the government-run telecom service.

Speaking to reporters, Scindia highlighted that BSNL’s subscriber base has been growing steadily. This development comes at a time when BSNL is poised to compete with private telecom giants by providing robust 4G services. The minister emphasized that the 4G network has been developed without using any foreign equipment, particularly from China, adhering to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance.

Scindia elaborated on the collaborative efforts behind this technological advancement, noting that Indian firms such as Tejas Network, C-DOT, and TCS played crucial roles. “We will install 80,000 towers by the end of October and the remaining 21,000 by March next year, which means one lakh towers of 4G network will be installed by March 2025,” he said. These installations will significantly enhance network speed, facilitating faster downloads and improved television viewing experiences.

Moreover, Scindia mentioned that the 4G network could be upgraded to 5G with some modifications to the towers. “We will soon complete the journey from 4G to 5G,” he assured, indicating ongoing efforts to ensure the seamless transition to next-generation connectivity.

The minister also highlighted that many telecom customers are switching to BSNL from private service providers, attracted by the promise of prompt and reliable service. This strategic move by BSNL, combined with the government’s support, is set to enhance the telecom landscape in India, providing subscribers with advanced and secure connectivity options.
